On October 9, 2025, the INC officially launched its Sustainability Certification at its headquarters in Reus, during the NUTS 2025 research event. This landmark initiative is the first certification designed exclusively for the global nut and dried fruit sector, tailored to the unique challenges and characteristics of the industry.
A Milestone for the Industry
“For the nut and dried fruit industry and the INC, sustainability is not just an initiative, it is a strategic priority,” said Goretti Guasch, INC Executive Director. “While there are many certifications that include specific sustainability components, none have been designed specifically for our sector. This certification has been created by the industry, for the industry.”
The certification recognizes the progress companies have already made while providing a clear framework to drive further improvements. Covering environmental, social, and governance (ESG) dimensions, it helps businesses prioritize sustainability actions, align with best practices, and meet verified standards. INC members now have the opportunity to be the first to achieve certification, with available standards as follows: Standard for Almond Growers, Standard for Macadamia Growers, Standard for Walnut Growers, as well as the Standard for Processors and Manufacturers, and the Standard for Global Trade Specialists. Standards for additional products will be announced soon. View standards.
Driving Change Across the Supply Chain
During the launch, INC Executive Committee members highlighted the certification’s impact across the global supply chain. Many growers, often multigenerational family operations, have long implemented practices that protect soil, water, air, and biodiversity, forming the foundation for sustainable production. The certification builds on these practices by introducing social and governance standards that ensure fair treatment of employees and suppliers.
Committee members also emphasized that China, with 1.4 billion people, is a major market driving change for sustainable products across the sector. Designed to support companies of all sizes, the INC Sustainability Certification provides practical guidance on areas ranging from carbon footprint reduction and Zero Waste initiatives to responsible handling of agricultural inputs.
Leading the Way in Sustainability
“In today’s world, sustainability is no longer a ‘nice to have’, it is the right thing to do,” added Ashok Krishen, INC Chairman. “We are proud to lead the way in advancing sustainable practices, ensuring our industry continues to grow responsibly and sustainably for generations to come.”
With the launch of this certification, the INC is setting a new benchmark for the nut and dried fruit industry, positioning it as a global leader in sustainable practices.
